Jarrod didn't cover hands and fingers, he covered hands and fingers as wings [Image Can Not Be Found] It is neither hands and fingers as wings or webfootedness.

Well, how about the webbing between the fingers, and between the thumb and first finger?   Eventually we'll get this question nailed.  I think.

Yes! [Image Can Not Be Found] The eponychium is the cuticle, and beneath the cuticle is a thin layer of a membrane known as the pterygium.

A-ha!  The scattergun approach wins again!

Ok, what does 'MPEG' stand for?  I've always heard of it as a file-type, but have never heard what the anachronym stands for...

Moving Picture Experts Group, if I recall correctly, like JPEG is Joint Photographic Experts Group.

Thanks Jarrod!

We're not related, but we should be. That would be cool.

What's the fastest growing plant in the world? Some subspecies are capable of growing 100cm (39 inches) a day.

I've got 2 excellent guesses, but as I'm "down here", I'm gonna guess kudzu.  A huge problem in the south.

@Jarrod:  If Steerpike and I were related I could make good use of that History degree, and I could drag him into my feeble (so little time) attempts at learning Italian.  We could make pasta.  We could learn to crush grapes.  It would be fantastic.  [Image Can Not Be Found]    But too bad he lives up there where it's cold.   [Image Can Not Be Found]

I often think I'm secretly related to Spike, Yap, and Kay. They all take care of me and say nice things.

Spike, you may be right, but I will say "no," because that's not the plant I had in mind. I recently learned it's "one of" the fastest growing plants... so I rephrase the question to "What is one of the fastest growing plants in the world."

I've never actually seen kudzu in its natural state. Is it like a ground-cover?

My next guess is some species of bamboo or another.

Kudzu is a fast-growing vine that loves to climb anything and everything.  I will climb up trees and other plants and effectively kill them by blocking out the light.  I've read that under the right conditions it can grow as much as 1ft. per day.  Eradicating it is a tough, tough battle.

Well done, Spike, the answer is bamboo. Given how hard a time pandas seem to have finding enough of it to eat, you'd think it was a very finicky vegetable, but in fact it can grow the aforementioned 39 inches per day.

Bamboo is the devil. It's a grass and can grow anywhere. As a kid, we lived in a house with an atrium. Lots of lovely plants including a mini stand of bamboo. We found shoots coming up in the backyard. On the other side of the concrete foundation!. My father would dump photographic chemicals on it in a feeble attempt to kill it. I think the chemicals just made it stronger.

Thanks Steerpike.  Before our zoo got its panda cubs from China there was much concerned discussion in the news about how we'd feed those cubs.  The city donated several acres to the zoo to grow several kinds of bamboo.  Until then I didn't know that it grew so fast.

It's a family tradition, starting with this generation, i.e., me!, that the parent tries to fool the children one good one every year. So far my record is perfect, but it's getting harder and harder as they get older and wiser. So yes, I will be vigilant [Image Can Not Be Found]
