Did anyone in the northern US just feel that earthquake? I'm in Toronto and hearing that apparently also affected Montreal, London (Ontario) and Buffalo.

My office building just shook for a good 5-10 seconds.

Just found this on Google News.  5.5 is mild?  Report says it was on the Ontario/Quebec border.  Hang on xtal.

Yeah I think the way the Richter scale works is exponentially; so like, a 6.0 might be a pansy quake, but the one that hit Port Au Prince was a 7.0, and that was epic.

I'm sure no humans were harmed in this one, but some teeny tiny creatures may have been. Like ants. Bless you, ants...blants!

Speaking as one who lives in earthquake country (tm), 5.5 is middling. Right around 6-ish is when you stop and take note. It also depends on how deep, duration and what kind of motion it generates: shaking or rolling. Size matters. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Are we still on the topic of earthquakes here?   [Image Can Not Be Found]

I knew someone would pick up on that. Yes, we're still on the subject of earthquakes! [Image Can Not Be Found]

I've only been in shaking quakes. They are kinda cool. Stuff rattles and rings and makes a lot of noise but not much happens. I make little girl sounds and stand in a doorway while all my California friends laugh at me.

I  would probably get seasick if I was ever in a big rolling quake.

That made my day - thanks ants. Thants.

Earthquakes are pathetic in the UK. I've slept through every single one we've had. In fact, during one of them I was lying in bed awake and I still didn't notice it. Friends told me it was like a gust of wind hitting their house. Oh noooes! A gust of wind! Duck and cover! A gust of wind is coming!!

Scout, *I* get in a doorway during shaking quakes. Particularly if it seems they're lasting longer than "normal". The '89 quake was like that - first a giant jerking motion, then the shaking began in ernest. Not a fun ride... and my house is on rock. Some friends who lived further out (near the Presidio and on compacted sand) had stuff jumping off shelves and the fridge opened and closed on its own. [Image Can Not Be Found]

We almost never get earthquakes in this region. I was in Texas and missed the whole thing! Also: Texas is a fiery hellscape!

Glad you're okay, Xtal. I've never actually felt an earthquake before.

Indeed, I've heard Texas may be fodder for the sequel:

Hellscape: Torment

p.s. that was a joke, fear not, Planescape fans... hopefully it will never have to endure the same fate as "XCOM"  (le sigh)

p.p.s. can I not make "p.s." text smaller? there seems to be no "smallify" or "embiggify" text options.

You've coined 2 new words that I really like.  [Image Can Not Be Found]

Ooh, I get it now.  Toronto is gearing up for G8.  No wonder there was an "earthquake" the other day.  It was the sound of thousands of lily-livers bouncing around.  The hot air is on its way.

Speaking of which, we just had an itty-bitty quake - 3.5. Only reason I felt it was 'cause I was sitting at my desk watching the Netherlands/Slovakia match. With all the weird weather, quakes, etc. I'm thinking the world will begin hurtling toward the sun next year... just in time for 2012.
