Any Lost fans here? I've been a sad devotee since the middle of the first season. Sixth season premiere last night was pretty crazy/confusing! I think the show has gone downhill since the awesome-- and universally reviled--third season, but I'm sticking it out until the end.

I am only in the third season but I'm sure I'll watch it all the way through. The third season, I have to say, is not holding my interest much. I was thoroughly hooked on seasons 1 and 2 and chalked up my lack of love for season 3 to burnout.

I officially wrote it off after season 4. The intrigue and mystery got buried under a ton of shit that nobody could or would ever want to wade through. They jumped the shark a long time ago. I envisage the most disappointing finale ever!

You're probably right, Gregg. I think it only ever got popular because they held off as long as they possibly could on fully delving into the "sci-fi" of the show. They probably could have cut out a lot of filler with stronger writing and ended the show in five seasons instead of six.

Jen, season 3 picks up around the thirteenth or fourteenth episode, the one where Billy Dee Williams guest stars, and it's quite engaging from that point on. The first six episodes are undoubtedly the most hated of Lost's entire run. I always attributed this to the fact that there was very little plot development combined with the hiatus from mid-November to February that it went on after episode six. Though more recently the show-runners have acknowledged this lull and admitted that they were over budget for the show, hence "the cage episodes."

In general, it's much better to watch at your own pace on DVD-- then again, what show isn't.

Yeah I definitely agree with you there. I enjoyed it far more watching the episodes back to back. The problem is that I don't really want to watch the rest of the series but I've invested too much time in it to quit now! [Image Can Not Be Found]

Potentially, a LOST fan here?

First & only scene I ever saw of LOST was episode one (as I recall), even before the credits -> dead & dying airline passengers strewn about a beach following an apparent plane crash. Nuh-uh, I am uncomfortable enough with flying. Plus, my itineraries are of epic proportions (last trip, 48 hrs. one way –> India; 12 flights in 2 weeks).

That said, I'm currently ripping Season 1 & 2 into my netbook for next month's trip to Vietnam. Shorter than movies & episodic, I'm hoping LOST will grab me for 2 weeks. Then when I return, suffering addiction & jetlag & often sick (pneumonia? bronchitis? strep throat?), 3 more seasons will await to fill nights when I can't sleep.

Ok, Mr. xtal, season 1 & 2 are 24 episodes each = 48 x ~45 min. Should I rip season 3? Each disk (14/season 1&2) runs ~ 4gb, my HDD is 160 gb, but I can bring along a Passport hd backup.

Realistically, neither HD space nor endless hours waiting with nothing to do is the problem. The Problem is Power – or lack there of, both battery (I have 3 cell & 6 cell) or electrical outlet (bringing extension cord, 3-prong plugs). Anyone have suggestions?

I drifted away from Lost in Season 3, but seasons 1 and 2 were mesmerizing. Some of the smartest TV I've seen, which made me happy because it forced viewers to be smart instead of watching Roseanne or something.

Can you rip to a secondary device, like an iPhone, to turn to when the battery dies? Despite the small screen I've found my iPhone surprisingly easy to watch stuff on.

Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.

No cell phone? [Image Can Not Be Found]

I know, hard to believe in this day & age. I'm waiting for a device not-yet-sold that will meet all my needs (unassessed at the moment), costs little-to-nothing/mo. and includes a data plan. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Till then I wait. Going to give Google's phone a few more months to work out the kinks before I decide.

Edit:  But, look at this. I have xmas credit @ Amazon…hmmm….

I urge anyone who dropped off at some point to revisit. And also to those who lose it in the first third or half of season 3 to press on-- it gets better!

That said, it went downhill again after season 3 I think (though the general consensus was that 4 was as good as 1, but I disagree still), but no matter how it ends up Lost will leave an important legacy. Its proven that you don't have to rely on HBO or some other niche channel for a good serial drama. Obviously it's not pulling in even half of the numbers that it did in its first year, but it has an established (tv) base of somewhere around nine to eleven million per week, and most networks will take that.

Hopefully it will inspire a generation of X-Files-like shows, but ones that are able to start and end on their own terms, when and how they want. In the end anything that can grant more creative freedom is a positive force.

Well, the series finale of Lost aired tonight. Throughout the last 6 years it had its share of ups and downs and like most shows will probably be remembered with mixed reviews and opinions.

Despite many lows, unanswered questions/mysteries and missed opportunities I will not sit in the camp that begrudges it. It is the only television show I have followed from beginning to end during its original run; week-to-week, year-to-year. For that alone it naturally holds a place in my heart.

The finale for me was pure catharsis. It didn't set out to deliver ham-fisted answers to every outstanding question, nor please anyone who decided to tune in for the first time in years. What it did do was handle with care the characters that made up the show; in the end it was their journeys and experiences that were reflected upon. Decidedly a two-and-a-half hour metaphor for the collective journeys that the fans themselves had taken with these characters.

Tonight's episode, aptly titled "The End," washes away much of the old skepticisms I've held, replaced with acceptance, relief and ultimately a mixture of sadness and happiness. I actually choked up and cried twice; the first time I've done so while watching television since the finale of Battlestar Galactica last March.

In the end one can never be fully satisfied by the revelations and resolutions of a long-running story; but with Lost, as with so many others, that's part of the lesson. Life won't feed you answers and it won't go out of its way to accommodate you: it's just there; we're impossibly lucky to inhabit it, and we've gotta make our own kind of music.

This will always be a show I don't get. I tried again this spring to get into it, watching the first four or five shows on dvd but no dice. Which is good cause I read what the ending was yesterday I would have been a little more than angry. Out of respect for anyone planning to watch I'll not say any more. Glad you got so much out of it Xtal.

I'd love to talk more about it and explain my own ideas of what it meant, but I'll refrain from that in case anyone reading decides to pick it up one day.

Thanks for reading!
