Does anyone have some rad slow cooker recipes? The weekend is totally the time for slow cookers, and it's the easiest thing to use and I just feel so special when I throw a bunch of crap in there and dinner comes out, as if I knew what I was doing or something.

I hear that Togeraptor eggs cook nicely in any kind of stew, but those are very rare (and very well guarded, I think).

If you're a meat eater, try this tangy, spicy brisket. It's stupid-good. It's the only meal that my son has warmed up the leftovers – by himself, without any hidden ingredients from me – and eaten. It was that good. And he's a picky thing. I made it in the oven as I don't own a slow cooker and it was fab. u. lous.

This tarragon chicken is yummy, too.

I don't have a crockpot, but often slow-cook stuff in the oven or on the stovetop.  Slow cooking is so easy, and you almost can't ruin whatever you put in the pot – unless you cook it too high for too long.

What do you like?  Fancy some sausages and sauerkraut and carrots?  Just dump a jar of kraut (liquid and all) in the pot.  Add your favorite sausage (links, the bigger the better).  Add carrots and onions and garlic (fresh, whole, but cleaned and peeled).  Toss in a bit of salt and pepper to taste.  The big secret:  8-12 ounces of beer.  Cheap is fine because the alcohol evaporates anyway, but a good beer is better.  Turn the thing on.  Go play games for several hours.  Voila!  Dinner.  Add a good bread, and you've got a very hearty meal that can last several days (in the fridge) if your pot is big enough.

Like corned beef and kraut or cabbage?  Follow my instructions above, but use a corned beef brisket that you cut into 4-6 large hunks.  Use fresh cabbage (clean the outside of any dirt then cut into halves or quarters) instead of kraut (you can use kraut if you like it).  As above, carrots, onions, garlic, salt and pepper and beer.

Pot roast?  3 lb. beef chuck roast cut into 4-6 large pieces.  Carrots, onions, potatos, garlic, salt and pepper.  No beer, although I guess you could.  Over this pour 1 or 2 cans of beef broth or stock.  About an hour before you think the meat is cooked to your liking, mix a few tablespoons of flour in 1/2 cup of water and mix until most of the lumps are gone.  Then add that to the pot, stir, and wait until it has thickened into a gravy (45 min. maybe).

Use chicken (pieces or a whole chicken cut in half) instead of beef for the pot roast, and use chicken broth or stock.  All else remains the same, except that the cooking time will be a bit shorter.

xtal, those of us who have been cooking for a long time know that it's really hard to make mistakes with basic foods.  Overcooking in terms of time or temperature will ruin a recipe more than anything else.  With a crockpot you've got an almost mistake-proof appliance.  Throw in stuff you like and see what happens.  Sloppy Joes.  Pulled-pork BBQ.  The list of simple crockpot recipes is as long as your imagination.

Bon appetit!

By the way:  dont' get too good at this cooking thing, because if you do, those of us who may be sick of cooking might just appoint you Chief Cook in the silo.

I secretly cook. Not well, understand, but I do it. My brother Marcus is like the World's Best Straight Male Chef; I meanwhile get strange ideas involving blenders and stoves and wind up throwing it out because it's revolting. When Marcus cooks strangers show up at his door; how his wife GG manages to stay perennially 100lbs is beyond me. Me, when I cook, even the cat leaves the room. But I feel the ability to cook (badly) is a good skill for a single man to have, so I nurture it.

Slow cookers are great for bad cooks, because you can basically clean out the fridge into one, add a little salt and pepper, and go away for ten hours. Then you have delicious food.

Xtal, you can make a mean chili in a slow cooker if you don't mind a fair amount of prep. I use stew beef instead of ground, but beyond that the ingredients can be anything you like in your chili. Put it on brown rice with shredded mozarella cheese on top and you can even claim it's healthy (brown rice makes anything healthy, if you put cheesecake on brown rice it would be healthy).

Hey, where's Sennebec? Haven't seen her in a while and I recall she was a bit of a chef. She'd have some great suggestions.

Yep, it was chili last night. Not bad, either.

This sounds pretty brilliant too:

I think it'll be next.

Beef stew is about the only thing I make in my slow cooker. But it is delicious. The meat is very tender and the vegetables don't get mushy.

I bet brisket cooked with beer and salsa would be good. I've always made it in the oven. Great served on crusty French rolls.

Me and the Miss really need to invest in one of these slow cookers simply because of the convenience (and ideas above) but also because of a 'One Pot Cookbook' we got for Christmas.

These recipes sound delicious everyone. My god I'm hungry...
