Svalbard:  The climate of Svalbard is dominated by its high latitude, with the

average summer temperature at 4 °C (39 °F) to 6 °C (43 °F) and January

averages at −12 °C (10 °F) to −16 °C (3 °F).

(Thanks, Wikipedia.)

I'm going to go get a cup of hot tea.  Just cutting and pasting that sentence has got me to shivering.

Yap has the right of it with regard to the 355 days of winter in SF, except for the part about it being warm in August.

October is our 10 days of warm, then it goes right back to 55-ish. SF is the only place in the continental US where you can wear wool all year long… except those 10 days.

AC doesn't match that whole Victorian/Edwardian/Queen Anne type housing (we're all about the Dickensian habit of wearing fingerless gloves – INDOORS) for us to switch to AC. And for only 10 days a year?

And SF is twee. I find it entertaining. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Steerpike? We're NOT going to Svalbard! Unless you're planning to live inside one of those stinky riding things like Luke did on Hoth.

No, Toger, I'm right. [Image Can Not Be Found] [Image Can Not Be Found]

My Autumn doesn't mean late summer aka August. My Autumn starts in mid October TSW (Texas Standard Weather).

Plus, you don't have enough outlets for AC. Snaking extension cords are dangerous with high watt appliances. Never mind that household wiring would have a stroke if it met 220v.

Victorian & quaint, for sure. What I can't help wondering when looking at the houses is how labor intensive the painting of multi-color trim.

Sounds like a cool house, Yapette. Hows about's a pic. Wait. Are you posting about your house by the gators? Anyway, I posted my car here remember? Highlight of my week.

You speak the truth about the wiring, Yap. The wiring in my place "ate" a microwave oven.

48 and sunny today in little old Portland. I actually stood in my yard and did gardening. After months and months on rain saturated ground water, this town is like living on a sponge with bad city services. It's been raining for weeks. Friends of mine are going to Hawaii to lie on the beach and pluck low lying fruit and dive down the corral reef cliffs before lunch.

P. K. Dick said that it's not paranoia if the phone is watching you. Prescience born of crazy and far too many amphetamines.

It's a cheery mid-winter day here in Maine. Inoffensive puffs of snow are drifting by my window to saw hello to me, the seagulls, and the bright sunshine. My window is open to wave back, feel the real world. It's Sunday so hopefully the building owner isn't around to ride me for wasting his precious oil.

Toger, you got to choose where we went last time, so this time it's my turn, and I choose SVALBARD. You can choose again after Xtal's turn, which is next. You'll get to see reindeer and polar bears. It'll be awesome.

Here in Michigan we've been spared the turrible snowstorms of the rest of the country, which is odd (given that it's Michigan and the entire state is a Lake Effect region). It is snowing right now though. Sort of swirling around. I have a fire going, mostly for image since I prefer the cold. Of course, I'm in the other room, but still.

I may have to move to SF. 55 year round except for 10 days in October seems pretty bearable.

SF weather is pretty bearable... except those odd days where it gets stupid cold (by our thin-blooded reckoning) and drops below 40. Victorian/Edwardian/Queen Anne houses are adorably quaint; however, they didn't know jack about R20 insulation during construction (I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they didn't consider ANY insulation beyond newspaper) so those really cold days you may as well be outside 'cause that's what it feels like inside. When you're wearing all your clothes to bed, it's not going to be a fun night. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Ahhh, below 40. It's an underappreciated climate. But I like it!

Steerpike, I just remembered. Ten years ago I was in Ann Arbor, in January, stuck in a motel for ten days training....surrounded by feet-deep snow. Some nights I bundled up enough to trek (by foot) to a nearby mall just to get out of the building.

Still have the winter coat I bought (at Goodwill) to take on the trip. Haven't worn it since. Keep it around juuust in case I am ever dumb enough to go North, where it snows, in winter, again. [Image Can Not Be Found]

SF's 55 with anomalous 40 does sound lovely but there are rather a lot of hills. I'm a lazy sod and it's not my preferred form of going up and down.

55F day/30F night is my dream climate. Edinburgh was most pleasant if a bit soggy.

I think it would be nice to snuggle up in snow.  We're having a top of 29' C today, which will be pretty nice.

And aren't the start of seasons standard everywhere?  You can have an Autumn halfway through a month?  How does that work?

San Francisco essentially has its own weather, Jarrod, though the "official" start of seasons are the same everywhere. I visited there a few times on business and while I agree with Fink that it's a hilly spot, I liked the gloomy coolness.

I'm first to admit that I'm odd in preferring extreme cold over moderate warmth. That's why I'm looking forward to visiting Svalbard with Toger and Xtal. They'll have to bring parkas, sure, but I've been to Corpus Christi Texas on business like five times in the last twelve months, and it's 90-some F every time. This is my cooling-off period. Like the planet Venus.

29C is ridiculously hot. Between that and the spiders, I don't know how you Australians manage down there!

Ah!  29º C.  The low end of my comfort zone.  Gonna have to wait 13-16 weeks for that.  Unlike most people I also like humidity.  It's better than dry hair/skin/nails and static electricity.

Yeah, anywhere near 30'C is a bit too warm for me, and Brisbane is humid as hell.  At our worst here, we'll probably get up to around the mid 30's.  if I have to have heat, give me the dry heat any day, Spike!  I can always put on moisturiser!

It's always easier to get warm when you're cold, than to cool down when you're hot.

And on a different note, Svalbard is a cool name.  Like a viking poet or something.

It's always been the opposite for me.  I should live in the US in the summer, and in Australia during our winter.  Best of both worlds for someone who likes the heat.

Yap, couple of questions you may be able to answer:

Should I invest in an anti-theft, non-slashable handbag or will a regular cross-body bag (similar to this) do?

In the realm of TMI: should we bring our own roll of squishy 2-ply toilet paper? (spoiled Americans that we are)

Truth be told, I've developed my own method of avoiding touching nasty bathrooms (I won't go into the sordid details) [Image Can Not Be Found]

At the very least, I plan on packing this!
