Fantastic article. I love reading about MMOs from people who actually know something about them, because I completely do not. This doesn't stop clients from hiring me to voice my opinions on them, of course, but ssshhhhhh.

Dix, if you keep giving good design advice like this away for free, people will take advantage of you!

Oh God, why didn't I take a frame of the video and turn it into a header picture? It's like, so obvious. I've ruined the whole "web experience" by not thinking these things through.

Nice choice! It makes me look younger!

"I have to admit. Peaches is exactly what a lot of art games feel like to me… At some point I swear I’m going to write about Passage."

Ahhh, mission complete. ;-)

I've never been impressed with Passage. I said much of what I would say about Passage about Dear Esther a while back, so I won't repeat it here, but I always did find it curiously unaffecting. I think part of that is because of how little trouble there was. Passage is almost like an approximation of the kind of life I dread having: predictable, go-through-the-motions, no excitement.

Thanks all!

One of the most interesting things about Dark Souls is that it has a very comprehensive fiction, but it doesn't tell you any of it; what it does tell you is not laid out in a logical order. It falls to you to figure things out, to put the story together yourself, and you have to REALLY PAY ATTENTION. For example, loading screens show text about various items - it's not just filler. Big pieces of story are hidden in there. You have to listen to what people say, how they say it, when they say it, and so on. The result is that each player is challenged not only in the game, but by the game. Your interpretation may differ from someone else's, but Dark Souls doesn't make anything easy, including the story.

Some people take this to mean that there is no story, or that they just threw together a bunch of unconnected stuff, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. I applaud the design; if you don't want to spend time thinking about and analyzing the story, you don't have to, but it's there if you like that sort of thing.

@Human Being - thanks for the correction. I mix up the Darkwraiths and the Darkmoon Blades. I've already finished the game and know about the alternative "sponsor" path, which I hope to trigger in my NG+.

@John G - you are quite right. I really did hit Siegmeyer, by accident, during this scene, but I knew he was doomed regardless. He threw himself in the pit before I had a chance to soften those bastards up with arrows. It was sort of like approaching the painting in Anor Londo: you mean to just "examine" it, but of course this is Dark Souls we're talking about here, there are very few chances to think things over.

@Harbour Master & Scout - I hadn't really thought of Torment as a comparison, but actually that works. Both games are sort of Dickensian in a way, populated by the bizarre and the grotesque. Both mete out their stories in a manner that requires analysis and investiture from the player. Both tell very dark stories but have moments of levity (Torment has quite a few MORE moments of levity, but hey). And both really do make you care about the supporting cast; in Torment's case it's your party, while in Dark Souls it's the people (and snake-dog things) that you meet.

Just a heads up, Dark Sun Gwyndolin didn't found the Darkwraith covenant, but the Darkmoon Blade Covenant, which are blue phantoms which invade people who killed certain npcs, broke a covenant or were indicted for invading a player as a black(red) phantom. The Darkwraiths are a completely different kettle of fish and are centered around a large part of the story, which has to with your suspicions of Frampt being manipulative. If you want to find out about this part of the story without looking on the internet, play the game as you do normally, but when you get the Lordvessel defeat the boss of the New Londo Ruins but DO NOT speak to Kingseeker Frampt after getting the Lordvessel.

Don't feel too bad Sieg was already dead anyway the moment he jumped in because he wont survive if his HP get bellow a certain threshold. The only way to save him 100% sure is to kill all the four monsters below before talking to him. It not advisable because that end his quest line there or kill three monster leave one with half HP and let Sieg finish it. If you take the sure path Sieg story end there and you get a crappy ring. If you take the more risky path Sieg will reunite with his daughter at the Ash lake bonfire and you get a Titanite Slab out of it. The sadistic part of From Soft really show in that quest. Because if you have not been reading the wiki you really got no way of finishing the quest on your first playthrough.
