This week, Joel Goodwin of Electron Dance and I slink around in the dark trying to kill each other in Mild Beast Games’ At Sundown: Shots in the Dark. We played this a few years back at Rezzed and loved it, and since then it’s been in active development. Much to our excitement it was finally released in January this year!
At Sundown is a ‘stealth driven arena combat’ game. If you’re in the dark, you’re invisible. Attacking reveals you, as do any light sources dotted around the maps — including cracks of lightning and train headlights. Unlike the similar Invisigun Heroes/Reloaded where you move on a grid and aim in the cardinal directions, At Sundown is a lot more granular with full 360 degree aiming and analogue movement. I found with parties, this makes the game a lot more accessible and immediately fun. There’s plenty of maps with their own hazards and quirks, modes that shift the focus of play, weapons and pick-ups, options to tweak and local as well as online multiplayer. My only real gripe is that some of the content has to be unlocked, which I’m rarely happy about in party games!
At Sundown is available on Steam, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch and comes very highly recommended.
