The Log is late again. But can you really stay mad at a face like that?
The truth is, we’ve been having an absolute scorcher in the UK just recently, what with the delayed appearance of something called the “Sun“. I hear it’s a more regular feature in other parts of the world, but I and many of my compatriots are suspicious of it. What is it doing? What is it for? Why does it turn my skin a pinky shade of red? And when are the clouds and the wind and the rain coming back?
Alas, my first thought was naturally to stay in doors and continue to chip away at my backlog of games, but my wife insists we should probably try and enjoy the hot weather while it’s here. Summer doesn’t tend to agree with me. Summer makes me sneeze and that itchy, itchy grass makes me, well, itchy. Even beer is not my friend, refreshing as it is. Hay fever, sunburn and itchy skin are merely added complications when you have a hangover. The Joys of Summer, indeed.
As a result, I’ve not quite managed to find the time to update this months Log up until now. But here we are, better late than never. It was originally my intention to update each Log at the end of every month anyway, which seems a more logical way of doing things, so perhaps this is the start of something altogether more organised. Thanks, summer time!
Oh, and one more thing. Next month I’ll be posting a longer post updating the scores of everyone who has taken part in the Log of Shame thus far, so make sure your scores are up to date before the last week or so in June. Even if you haven’t updated for a couple of months, feel free to jump back into the game at any time. I feel we’re approaching Steam sale time sooner than later. And that’s when things get really interesting.

I completely fell off the wagon this month.
April Score: -5
May Games Acquired: 4
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (free DL for PS Plus members)
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (DS)
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (DS)
Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (360)
Games finished: 1
Castlevania: SotN
Year-to-date Score: -8
I went Castlevania crazy this month! After downloading Symphony of the Night from the PSN, I got completely addicted to that game for the third time (previously completed it multiple times during its initial PSOne release, and then again for the Live Arcade release). This game always sucks me in! I freaking love it!
It was so bad this time for some reason that when I was done I wanted more old school 2D Castlevania, so I picked up two of the DS titles!!! I need help!
To make things worse I am at the end of both Mass Effect 3 and The Witcher 2 and for some reason I have lost all interest in both games and have yet to finish them. 🙁
God damn you Steam, I hate you and all you stand for.
April score: -4
Acquired…
Endless Space -1
Bastion -1
Mount & Blade Warband -1
Arma 2 -1
Dragon’s Dogma -1
Max Payne 3 -1
Ghost Recon Future Soldier -1
Completed…
Fuck all +0
Current score… -11
Previous score: -4
Finished:
Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath +1 (It’s a great little game, a true gem on the gem-deficient original Xbox. The endgame is HARD, but my son convinced me to soldier through it)
Acquired:
Deadly Premonition -1
Dragon’s Lair Trilogy -1 (There’s nostalgia for you)
Current score: -5
Looking forward to your thoughts on Deadly Premonition, Botch.
Been so long since I can play pc games with a mouse that I forget Log’s Rules. Went for my post cast 6 week checkup today and finally had enough nerve to look at the x-ray. The titanium plate in my wrist is as long as the incision: 4 INCHES in length with HUGE spikes stuck into the bone. As disgusting as it sounds!
In other news :-)….
Played a bit of Alan Wake: same, more of same, repeat, repeat.
Installed already owned & waiting on the shelf since release week: Two Worlds II and The Witcher 2 but neither felt right at the moment.
***Bought*** and installed Kingdoms of Amalur (such a deal @ $24.99 on ebay) but that didn’t click either.
Finally, after months sporadically playing the freebie version of Rift to level 13 but despondent over inability to sell on the auction house (as freebie) so how could I accumulate funds enough for a mount…last night I ***bought*** it. Tonight I’m happy and riding my horse. For a month, at least, until I must subscribe for real. Maybe by then I’ll be in the mood for TW II or the Witcher 2. Or long abandoned Skyrim (at lvl 5) or Fallout: Vegas (at lvl 12) or… or….
Steerpike, hold me, I feel your pain.
Acquired: Arma II: Combined Ops for DayZ.
Completed: Nada.
Total score for this month: -11.
Botch, damn, I’ve always wanted to play Stranger’s Wrath and nearly picked it up a few times. What did you play it on? PC, Xbox? If PC, where did you buy it from and what was the port like?
Oh hell’s bells! I thought I’d reached some sort of equilibrium this month. Apparently, my iPad will be the death of me:
Previous score: -9
Acquired:
Avadon: The Black Fortress -1
Lost Winds -1 (do double dips count?)
Ticket to Ride -1Finished: Big fat ZERO!!
Total for this month: -11
edit: I’m excluding Ticket to Ride due to its nature – digital board game and therefore no ending (Let it be written. Let it be so.)
Blimey, I forgot about iPad games.
Total for this month: I am not telling as too many I wanted were on sale. Let’s just say my new-in-March 32gb iPad has 10.4gb left. (Bard’s Tale uses a whopping 1.7gb).
P.S. My options to bold, italics (etc) & smilies are missing, what have I done (wrong)?
It might not be you, Yap, it might be The Universe. Let me check with it. Sometimes this stuff gets turned off in theme updates and such.
Steerpike: Roger that.
Gregg: Xbox. It looks gorgeous even on that aging platform. I played on and off over a long period of time. I don’t know about the quality of the port.
I found out yesterday about Bundle in a Box, just in time to make it before closeout!
http://bundle-in-a-box.com/
So I bought five games. Then I fussed around thinking about which game I have that I haven’t beaten yet that I felt like beating but haven’t beaten anything and I am now at -8.
However, I’ve been playing a lot of games you can’t really “beat,” like Civ 5, City of Heroes, some social games, etc. If a round of Civ win by domination counts as “beating,” then -7.
…shit, I’m lying. I also bought Analogue: a Hate Story, and Dear Esther recently, but those are all Steerpike’s fault.
Well that’s a change … usually when the word “fault” appears on this site it’s preceded by “Armand’s.”
I’m doing OK with the Log this year. Mostly because I’ve been sticking to the Souls games, and the only other games I’ve played this year (ME3, Diablo 3) I actually finished. I’m probably still at 0. No, wait… bought Rayman Origins in March. Okay so I’m +1. Or -1. Which ever the bad one is.
I plumped some money down for Lone Survivor as part of the Humble Indie Bundle. I also wanted some of the soundtracks that came with it.
-1. -12 total.
Rayman Origins is finished! My better half stuck with it to the very end with me as well, including the final final stage which is sadistically difficult and entirely optional. Hurrah!
+1! -11 total, pow!
Oh, tanis, what’s your favourite Castlevania on the DS? I’ve only played Dawn of Sorrow (which I really enjoyed) but was curious about the others.
What happened to this feature of Tap Repeatedly? I’ve been meaning to actually try to tackle my ever growing backlog of games. In the past month or so, I’ve acquired probably close to 20 different games through both GOG and Steam. Of course, I did this to explore some of the genres that I haven’t taken a very big enough look at, which is important for someone like me who wants to discover my place better as a person who’ll be working in the gaming industry.
Nevertheless, I hope to not make anymore purchases in a year or so, just to get a chance to play many of my games to a pretty good extent. Even if I don’t happen to finish all of them by the end of 2013 (which would seem almost impossible, considering that I’m tied up w/college right now and will hopefully be graduating in a few months from now), I will continue to try my best to stick to just these titles for a long while.
And admittedly, I didn’t experience a lot of games this console life cycle (not anywhere near the average gamer), so I’m a bit ashamed of myself for it, but, I guess, what’s most important is getting the basic aspects down (understanding the evolution of online gaming and the current trends), whilst, when it comes to knowing game genres well, ANY kind of game (from any time frame) helps out a lot.
It’s even possible that, as I’m renting many titles through GameFly, I will still occasionally purchase a game, but it’ll most likely be something that really involves practice and mastery (like a fighting game), with the rest of what’s out there just being experienced and “finished” with, when I feel like I’ve gotten enough out of it. Most games going forward will be played for free or rented, due to my limited budget. I forsee even much less impulsive shopping, no matter how “good” the deals may be on
Steam, GOG, or other (online/brick) retailers.
