Word’s finally official that Obsidian’s action/rpg spy romp has been delayed to 2010, though reports vary on whether we’re looking at a early or late second quarter release. Since Obsidian insisted that Alpha Protocol was on schedule as recently as August 27, one can’t help but assume this latest in a long line of delays is fallout from a recently leaked document written by a SEGA quality tester. Salient to our story are the claims that it’s “barely an RPG” and compares doesn’t hold a candle to its mechanical counterpart, Bioware’s Mass Effect. No official statement has been made, though.
With a Holiday Massacre as brutal as this one’s shaping up to be, a delay may not be all bad for Alpha Protocol. Sure, it’ll miss the frenzied Christmas release avalanche, but it should have Q2 2010 mostly to itself. If they take this time to adjust and perfect the game, we all might benefit. Still, my sympathy to everyone at Obsidian.
This is not good. I was hoping to be deep into this by Christmas. First rumbles about Bioshock 2 and now Alpha Protocol.
