So who here other than me played and enjoyed Bioware’s Mass Effect? Anyone?
Well I liked it, though it seems like it’s been so long now that I barely remember the experience. What I chiefly remember is that I’m unhappy with the Big Decision I made at the end, I should have chosen differently, which means that the upcoming sequel, so coyly teased in the above clip, is going to be my shot at redemption. Pay close, close attention to that Geth you see near the end. What horrors await us in Mass Effect 2?
My bet is the horrors of lots of dialogue.
I’m near the end of this, but not compelled to finish. I enjoyed the sophisticated atmosphere of the citadel and the quests there. The story with humans as an entry level species on the galactic stage is believable and fun. I had a harder time playing as an entry level long range weapon specialist trying to aim a sniper rifle prone to game developer aim jerk. I enjoyed laying the smite* down on those dirty Geth once I got to be a mid-level long range weapon specialist, I just wish there was more range in between.

I played and enjoyed Mass Effect thoroughly. Like many games I couldn’t appreciate it at first. After about one week of play in November, 2007 I put the game down for nearly three months due to frustration. I had just begun to explore the uncharted planets and basically I really, really sucked at the game and died a lot; I decided to ignore it.
Returning to it some time in February I gave the quasi-RPG/real-time combat system another go, with added patience. Once I properly understood the mechanics I began to appreciate Mass Effect for its many other shining qualities, and like a lot of games for lots of people the reasons I now adore it are largely personal.
I would love to read a FFC review on ME.
It has always been my belief that in order to keep the world aligned in proper balance I must play KotOR: The Sith Lords *before* Mass Effect. While they may not be the same story, it seems right, correct and “rational.” 😉
Waited for the pc version of Mass Effect which I bought while impatiently waiting for KotOR II’s fan patch. Now comes word that Mass Effect #2 is on the horizon while KotOR #2 continues to sit on the shelf gathering dust.
Is it finally time to reconsider my logic?
I think it may be time indeed, Yap. I loved the original KOTOR but never got around to the second. Your logic makes perfect sense to me, but I wouldn’t want you missing out on the great RPG that is Mass Effect.
Mass Effect, while it does have its problems (the most notable being a disastrous inventory management system), is really a fine addition to the RPG genre. It provides a very intelligent and measured commentary on racism and human shortcomings while also presenting alien species with far more depth and complexity than you generally see in sci-fi.
And if you play a girl character, you have the opportunity for hot alien lesbian sex.
Ok, I’ll realign myself. But may I take a pass on the lesbian sex which doesn’t interest me? For that matter, neither does the hetero(sexual) which I’m currently tasked with in The Witcher where I’m giving every girl the brush off. Maybe it’s just me, maybe it’s just that digital versions fail to satisfy. 🙂
